A cenotaph is a sepulchral monument for someone who is buried abroad. In fact, it represents an empty grave where family and friends can grieve their dead, as they often cannot mourn at the burial site itself. After the Great War (1914 – 1918), the British Empire decided not to repatriate the bodies of the men and women who fell on the battlefields. In remembrance of all casualties, resting in the numerous war graves overseas, the Cenotaph monument was erected near Whitehall, London.
The photographic book "Cenotaph 14-18" is a testimonial of the war graves and burial monuments on the Western Front, reaching from the Belgian coast to the Swiss border, in 96black and white 4 x 5 inch photographs.
The book visualises how the Commonwealth, American, German, French and Belgian forces commemorate their human sacrifices of the Great War.
